Think of the hierarchy from large to small:
Zone
└── Pod
└── Cluster
└── Host
-
Zone – Usually represents a data center/location.
-
Pod – A logical grouping of infrastructure, often corresponding to a physical network boundary.
-
Cluster – A group of hosts with similar characteristics and shared primary storage.
-
Host – The actual hypervisor server running the VMs.
For example:
Mumbai Zone
├── Pod 1
│ ├── Cluster 1
│ │ ├── KVM Host 01
│ │ ├── KVM Host 02
│ │ └── KVM Host 03
│ └── Cluster 2
│ ├── KVM Host 04
│ └── KVM Host 05
Understanding this hierarchy makes troubleshooting much easier because you can identify whether an issue is isolated to a VM, host, cluster, pod, or entire zone.
